Battleloth Shortsword - Living Weapon
This sword appears to be a normal shortsword, with a yellowish tinge to the metal. It functions as a +1 magical weapon, as the sword seems to lean into each attack, bending the movements to strike with greater, more deadly force.
However, this sword is actually a Battleloth, a creature created by Arcanoloths long ago to serve as living weapons to the bravest warriors of the Blood War. It has a mind of its own, though it is made to be most comfortable in its weapon form and will avoid its humanoid form unless entirely unavoidable.
It has the following features while in Shortsword form:
- Living Blade (Shortsword Form Only). When wielded by its master in combat, the battleloth can strike with a fiendish precision. The wielder can make an attack with the shortsword as if it were a +1 weapon. When the shortsword hits a creature, the battleloth can deal an additional 1d6 necrotic damage. This bonus damage can be used once per turn.
- Fiendish Precision (Shortsword Form Only). When the battleloth is used as a weapon, the wielder can expend their reaction to make the shortsword automatically turn to hit a target within 10 feet that would otherwise be out of reach (whether due to cover, difficult terrain, or otherwise). This can be used once per long rest.
- Magic Weapons. The battleloth’s weapon attacks are magical.
- Battle Fury. After the battleloth hits with a melee attack, it can use its bonus action to shift into its humanoid form and make a claw attack with its sharp talons. (Claws: +2 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 3 (1d4 + 1) piercing damage.) Once used, the battleloth has to use its action to change back into sword form, which it can only do on after recharging on a (5-6).
