Recap - 2026-04-23
After gathering up all the treasures from the Pyxis crypt’s Hope room, the group retraced their steps back to the entrance, where Grebo warned them of someone waiting outside.
Kor, expecting a fight, ran outside, only to be confronted by:
A yugoloth stands in the courtyard outside the entrance to the crypt. A thin black beak pokes out of a dark green hood, with eyes a mix of fiend and avian twinkling from inside. She stands roughly four feet tall, and her cloak is sleeveless, allowing her arms to be fully exposed. Her arms are long and slender, with greyish skin, and feathers extending along the backside from the wrist of her three-fingered hand to her shoulder. Lighter downy feathers cover the rest of her visible body, and the three large claws of her feet extend out from under the robe. She holds a large staff, almost twice her size, with a single large carved eye at the top.
As you exit, she turns her head back and forth, eyeing you all up and down.
Sitting on her shoulder is the imp that you so impressively lost on your way here.
She lets out a barking laugh, and says, “Well? What did you find down there?”
Chibro stumbled out and Kor stepped back to let Chibro talk. The yugoloth, introducing herself as Nerissa, High Prefect of Civic Affairs and Information, asked the question again.
The group was cagey, refusing to tell her anything about where they got the information about the Pyxis crypt, or what they found. She shoved past them, and feeling that the magics holding the crypt together were gone, collapsed it, saying she was glad the “festering sore” was finally gone.
She warned them to be ready to leave in the morning, then left.
The group returned to their resting place to find that Timandra had set out a wonderful feast for them, and seemed oddly eager to serve them. He offered each of them food and wine.
Most of the group, put off by Timandra’s obsequiousness, chose not to eat or drink. Angelus went so far as to pee on the food to express his distaste for it, but not before Gobbie started eating and drinking.
Before they went down for their rest, Chibro asked Timandra if it was possible to summon Quintus. Timandra did so, and Quintus stepped out of the shadows while the group was mid-discussion. Chibro shared he wanted to go inspect the crossbow before they left, worried that the Hands of Havoc had damaged it in some way.
Quintus opened his shadow portal, and the group walked through him to the city walls. The crossbow was mounted in the wall, with yugoloths chipping away at the stone, revealing a reddish ooze that swelled up and hardened around the crossbow.
Ventidius, the High Prefect of City Maintenance, was there as well, observing the installation. He was not happy to see the group, especially Angelus who had so rudely addressed him before.
Quintus convinced Ventidius to allow Chibro to check out the bow, and Chibro did so, attempting to disguise his actions as he cast mending to fix the hairline crack he had created as part of his deal.
Stepping back, he congratulated the team on their work, then went back through Quintus’ shadow portal, Ventidius seemingly none the wiser. As they arrived back at the inn, Quintus grabbed Chibro and warned him that he had seen what he had done, and that the next time they met, when no longer bound by the contract, he would not be as friendly as he was now.
The group kept watch through the night, and for each member of the group awake, Timandra attempted to ply them with wine. Each member refused, and Timandra seemed to be more and more desperate as the night went on, continually glancing out the window.
As the day dawned, Chibro began to mess with Timandra, asking him for a poem, then correcting his verbiage. Finally, Chibro asked Timandra to help him draft an agreement between the two of them, offering no contact for 100 days. Timandra balked at this, as he was bound to the city no matter what. However, compelled to advise Chibro, he warned Chibro that once they arrived at Nimicri, he would no longer be bound to serve them, and would be able to extract his (literal?) pound of flesh.
At this, Chibro asked Timandra to carry them to Quintus. Upon arrival there, Quintus banished Timandra back to his vial, and handed the group Potions of Flying to get them to Nimicry.
“Delivery to Nimicri, as agreed.” He holds out a potion to each of you, and says, “This is my final act. As you drink these, my deal with your employers is done.” Those of you with magical training can tell these are potions of Fly. He points up to the city, and says, “You can make your way up there, and you will find the portal for your return to Sigil inside the Merchant’s Hall. You can’t miss it, it’s the largest building in the capital.”
Chibro drinks a potion and then uses his Giant power to pick up the rest of the group and fly them to Nimicry, allowing the rest of the group to save their potions.
As you fly up and away, you can see the massive caldera of the volcano beneath you, the city resting a few hundred feet below the lip. You can see the large arcane crossbow you ferried here, mounted to one of the city’s walls, with a frenzy of movement around it. You see the city below you, its hundreds of legs gripping the side of the volcano with immense force. You see a small battalion of yugoloths talking with Quintus, as he gestures around him, then back where you all fought the large worm. And Josiah, you see, with your keen eyes, a figure standing on the top of one of the city’s myriad buildings. She is wearing a deep red cloak, a white porcelain mask with painted red lips, and holding a tall thin staff with a inky black gem on the tip, staring up at you. You have a brief flash of the mage in the bowels of the city, a mass of worms masquerading as a creature in a robe, and then, with a blink, she is gone.
And then you land on Nimicri, in an open market, bustling with people. Humans, elves, gnomes, dragonborn, tabaxi, yugoloths, all manner of creatures. It feels like Sigil, as they swirl around you in almost a dance as they move from stall to stall, place to place.
One of the creatures, a tall, broad-shouldered human with her green hair tied up in a bun, her metal armor glinting in the reflected light of the lava pool far below, steps forward. “Well, howdy there, y’all! Welcome to Nimicri! What brings you to our neck of the woods?”
The group, taken aback by the friendliness around them after their time in Gehenna, are leery to engage, but are slowly won over by the cookies they are plied with, and the seemingly genuine glee in meeting them that the denizens of Nimicry show.
Jo explains she came to Gehenna looking for her sister by way of the Molten Curtain, and was going to leave via Nimicry, but fell in love with the place and stayed.
She offers to take them to the Merchant’s Hall, explaining it’s about four hours walk. On the way, she regales them with the wonders of Nimicry, and seemingly greets each creature by name.
As they near their fourth hour, Jo told them that they would need to make one quick pit stop, at the Festival.
You cross over a bridge over the very calm river, with barely a ripple in the water below you. The ground beneath your feet to this point has been mostly rocky or sandy, but as you cross the bridge, the rocky soil turns more lush, with grass and small plants popping up, then trees.
In the clearing ahead of you is a collection of small stalls and tents, with dozens of creatures manning them. You see a tattooist sitting with her needles and inks, a inked third eye staring at you above her actual blue eyes. Across from him is a magician laying on a bed of nails. He gives you a thumbs up as you make eye contact. There’s a knife thrower, a climbing wall, a few dozen craft or food stalls, and at the northern edge, a large pit with two creatures inside, fighting inside a ring covered by a massive tent. One, a giant minotaur, raises a massive hooved foot and drives it out at the gnome standing across from him. The gnome dodges and jumps onto the foot, scrabbling up the minotaur’s leg, then jumping up and grabbing hard onto the minotaur’s beard. The minotaur lets out a bellow of pain, and grabs the gnome, throwing him across the ring, stumbling and falling as he does. They both fall to the ground, laughing. The crowd surges forward and they are lost from view.
Jo grins at you, and gestures to the festival, “Pretty neat, huh? Wanna join in? Lots of fun stuff to do.”
The group began to explore the fantastical place.
- Chibro picked up some honeycomb from a local vendor, only to be stung by one of the bees. A few drops of blood seep from the wound and drop to the ground.
- Josiah got a tattoo, and near the end, the tattooist sneeze, accidentally pricking his neck. She wiped away the blood with a handkerchief, throwing it on the ground.
- Dreri played with some baby owlbears, and one accidentally cut her with its razor-sharp claws.
- Grebo got a full-box scale wax, with one tug of the wax going too hard, drawing blood.
- Angelus went for a fortune telling, and the fortune teller pierced his palm with her sharp nail.
- Gobbie chose to avoid all the stalls, but did buy Angelus a caramel apple with an oddly sharp stick.
- Angelus also participated in, and won, a comedy competition, seeing the joy buzzer at the last second.
- Kor was the willing target of a knife thrower, keeping his steely nerves even as the knife thrower nicked his ear.
- Kor also participated in a few rounds of the friendly, luchador-style fighting in the right.
As they arrived as the portal, Josiah suddenly seemed to have a change of heart. He declared that he actually wanted to stay on Nimicry. His companions, confused, argued this made no sense, but Josiah insisted.
Chibro became very suspicious when Josiah willingly handed over his weapons to Jo. Finally, he grabbed Josiah and smeared honey on him, then threw him through the portal.
Josiah turned to goo as he was ripped from the ground, and Jo began screaming that they had killed their friend. The townsfolk gathered outside seemingly instantly, dragging Chibro and the group en masse to the fighting pit, demanding justice.
Chibro heard Josiah calling from beneath the pit, and realized that he was a prisoner there. He called out Jo as a fraud, and Jo revealed herself as a mimic. In fact, all of them were mimics, parts of the larger mimic that in Nimicry itself. Jo said, “It could have been the easy way; you chose the hard way.”
The townspeople transformed into terrifying monsters, mouths all over their humanoid-ish bodies. A nearby building animated into a terrifying monster house, and even the outhouse nearby grew teeth and charged. Several of the mimic townsfolks turned into Chibro, Angelus, Grebo, Dreri, and Josiah. Mimic Gobbie was nowhere to be seen, as the city was not able to get his blood to recreate him.
The mimics charged, and Chibro, realizing the danger they were in, yelled for the group to make a break for the portal, knowing that they would have to find a way to rescue Josiah before they fled.
