Recap - 2026-05-07
The mimics attacked. Chibro listened and focused on where he thought Josiah was being held, and pointed it out to the group. Angelus, thinking quickly, grabbed his javelin and struck the ground. The javelin bit through as though through flesh, not dirt, and Josiah saw it strike the floor near him.
The pit Josiah found himself in was slowly filling with acid, and he was restrained with a number of psuedopods that were wrapped around his arms and legs, holding him down onto the ground.
Angelus used all his strength to pull the javelin along the floor, with the psuedo-dirt floor stretching along with it, making the opening wide enough for Chibro to wedge himself into it and pull it open wider.
The city fought back, squeezing at him, but Chibro distracted it by firing two quick shots: One off to the side, damaging a secondary stomach and seeing the remnants of bones, and one very careful shot under Josiah, freeing him from the psuedopods holding him to the ground.
Angelus and Chibro worked to get Josiah up out of the pit, trusting their companions to keep them safe while they did. And their companions did not disappoint.
- Kor stood strong against a dozen mimics, taking blow after blow while fighting the enormous mimic house that loomed over him.
- Gobbie used his healing magic to keep the group up and fighting, bringing Kor and Tag up as they dropped, and smashing a mimic with his mighty hammer.
- The mimics of the adventurers charged at them, each choosing their targets seemingly based on some unspoken frustrations.
- Chibro’s mimic attacked Angelus.
- Kor and Dreri’s mimics both attacked their true selves.
- Josiah’s mimic attacked Chibro.
- Angelus’ mimic charged Tag, and while Tag’s mimic made some overtures at attacking Angelus, ultimately attacked Cath instead.
- When Gobbie was stabbed by Jo, a mimic version of himself appeared and began attacking Chibro and Angelus.
- Tag took out several mimics, but was swarmed by so many of them he was nearly lost.
- Angelus ran to help Dreri, who was amidst many mimics including her own, and helped to free her.
- Chibro kept calling for the group to escape, to flee to the portal. He tried at one point to cast banishment on the moon, but the moon shrugged it off. After he did, Chibro and Gobbie shared a look, realizing that if that had worked, it would have led to them plummeting into the caldera of Khalas.
- Chibro also managed to lock in place one of the mimics using his fire rune, and he realized that it was not just affecting that one mimic. As the mimics were all extensions of the massive moon, the effect was slowly spreading. This, plus Josiah’s quick teleportation, and Gobbie’s healing magic, allowed the group to escape.
As they fought, the city around them begin to shift and change. It became less and less real, turning from a photorealistic mimicry of a city to more of a vague representation, then to almost a child’s drawing, then to just a roiling mass of psuedopods and mouths.
There was a large minotaur who they assumed was another mimic, but quickly revealed himself to be a real person not yet subsumed by Nimicry. He fled with them, fighting alongside them, distraught about losing his friend “Jerry”. Josiah managed to convince him to come with them, and he fled through the portal.
Josiah kept using his magic to teleport his friends out of danger, and was key to the group successfully fleeing.
- Dreri made it to and through the portal first. She paused at the entrance for a moment, seemingly weighing whether she should try to rescue Angelus, but when she saw he was coming, she fled through.
- Gobbie was the second one through, tumbling through the portal mere seconds after Dreri.
- As the last few members of the party fled to the portal, the ground around them shifted to be a mass of roiling mouths and psuedopods, and they had to dodge and dive out of the way of the attacks.
- The still river that they crossed could be seen in the distance slowly opening, a massive mile-wide mouth with teeth as long as trains appearing.
- Josiah made it through the portal with his bladesong, carefully gliding around the monstrous mouths.
- Tag and Kor both went down running to the portal, but went down, and Chibro, bringing up the rear, healed Kor and carried Tag through.
- Grebo barely made it through but followed close to Gobbie.
As Chibro dived through the portal, he looked back to see the mimic of Jo reform into her original form. The city also reshaped around her, turning into a new configuration, with some echoes of buildings from the players’ pasts built into the landscape.
A mimic version of himself rose out of the ground and put a hand on Jo’s shoulder, and she blew Chibro a kiss, saying, “We’ll see you back here real soon, sugar.”
The group tumbled through the portal, and some of them fell into a scaldingly hot mud bath with some rock creatures. A cyclops pulled them out and demanded payment for use of the bath, which Josiah provided.
You stagger out of the flame pits and through the rest of the elemental bathhouse.
You see creatures of every kind taking a soak in the Flame Pits around you. Unicorns, Bariaurs, and various Fiends get their hooves trimmed in grooming rooms, and Galeb Duhr sigh as they settle into boiling tubs of mud. Patrons dry off in front of warm vents tied to windy desert realms or the chilling gales of Pandemonium.
The front doors let you out into the lower edge of the Market Ward, and the sights and smells of Sigil assail you, causing a momentary rush of sensation after your time on the lower planes. A surly gith raises his nose at you, but continues on without a word.
You make your way through the Market Ward to Small and Coats’ warehouse, and see Small sitting on the front porch, carefully carving something out of a beautifully marbled piece of wood. He looks up as you approach, and says, “Hey, you survived! I had even odds you wouldn’t.” He steps inside, then comes out and throws a duffel at you. It lands at your feet, and he calls out, “There’s your payment. Too bad about Tabi. I felt him die through the Bond”, he holds up a finger and shows a ring, “But that’s life on the planes. I took his funeral costs out of your take. Now, you all stink to high heaven. Go take some time, relax. I’ll call you when when we have something else, but you ain’t coming in my shop smelling like that!”
Please forgive the cinematic license below - you all have been in Gehenna for a while and I wanted to provide a “season-end” feel:
And as the music starts in, the group sets off, shouldering their way through the bustling crowds and colorful stalls in the Market District, slowly and wincingly making their way to their rooms at Chirper’s Inn. The camera watches them pass, each marveling in their own way at being back, at the wash of sensations around them after being in the pallid lower planes. Chibro’s trunk raised to catch the smells around them, Tag’s eyes catching the light glinting off the jewels and gems around him. Angelus hearing the clink of coins from one palm to another, with Dreri and Grebo walking in front of and behind him. Gobbie hearing the chants of a passing group of religious adherents. Kor feeling solid stone under his feet, seeing the wind blow through the razorvine wrapped around the buildings above him. Josiah’s still relatively new-to-him senses struggling to not be overwhelmed by the sheer presence of it all, his eyes squinting against the light.
The camera slowly pans behind them, and as the guitar grows, it pulls into a drone view, showing their dust-coated bodies making a line through the swirling bodies, and then it cuts to black as the lyrics kick in.
