Recap - 2025-11-20
Gobbie, you sit within the magical dome that Chibro creates for you all every long rest, and stare through the vague haze out at a figure you know must be from your imagination. Greebo, the kobold who taunted you and your friends into trap after trap, who led you on a not-so-merry chase through the halls of Gauntlgrym, who nearly killed all of you before you tracked him down and Bones slew him, is sitting on a boulder a little over sixty feet away.
He gives you a sardonic grin and a slow wave, but doesn’t say anything. You notice that his scales glitter with a golden radiance, and he seems a bit taller than you remember, but it’s definitely him.
You realize there are likely mere seconds left in the protective spell, and that once it falls, you’ll be wide open.
Gobbie engaged Greebo in a discussion, and Greebo asked him to play a game. He invited Gobbie to step out of the safety of the sphere. He told Gobbie that someone told him that Gobbie would be coming, and he was able to use his divine gifts to determine Gobbie’s true nature, as one of the one he taunted in Gauntlgrym.
When Gobbie didn’t fall for the trap, Greebo started making his way around to the crates, to “see what was inside.” Tag jumped out to try to stop him, and almost fell into lava as the thin mantle around them cracked.
Battle ensued:
- Greebo seemed to be enjoying himself, overall.
- Gobbie spotted all of the traps around them, but Chibro still jumped out and started setting them off while chasing after Greebo.
- Chibro kept putting musket shot after shot into Greebo, which seemed to annoy him. He declared that Chibro was “as much fun as the dumb fiends” he played tricks on, meaning…none.
- He also referenced that fighting Chibro was as boring as being on Nimicry with nobody to play pranks on.
- Kor jumped out and shoved Greebo onto a trap, which Greebo used to launch himself onto the crates. He then told Kor that he “ran into a maelephant up the river and smashed his trunk in a trunk.”
- Tag and Kor both found this incredibly funny, as Greebo cast “Tasha’s Hideous Laughter” on them.
- Josiah summoned some animated objects, including a massive boulder, to fight Greebo.
- Chibro continued to set off traps and somehow survive them.
- Tag was almost pulled into the lava by one of the traps, but resisted.
- The battle was pitched, and midway through, Kor realized that there were three well-dressed Hydroloths attacking their boat, including Pythagius Sandoris Witterstein Eragon Cybasix the Third.
- The group managed to whittle down Greebo’s resistance, weathering the traps, and Angelus finally managed to pin him in place with his fear effect.
- Kor picked him up and threw him in the Styx.
- Josiah hit the Hydroloths with two impressive fireballs, killing one of them, and driving the other two away. Pythagius Sandoris Witterstein Eragon Cybasix the Third swore further revenge on Angelus.
- Greebo climbed back out of the River Styx, having had all his memories wiped. His divine abilities as the avatar of Kurtulmak also appeared to be gone.
- Angelus convinced him that he was related to Greebo somehow (father/son) and that they had brought him to get his bad memories excised. Greebo didn’t necessarily buy the familial relationship, but was happy to stick with the group.
- Gobbie convinced Greebo that trap = food.
- Chibro discovered that Dreri had been hit by the same memory wipe effect that he was hit by when they last grappled with the Hydroloths, and managed to carry her, literally kicking and screaming, to Gobbie, who removed the curse.
- They all loaded back up in the boat after a short rest, with Dreri silently fuming about the group willingly subjecting someone to the river’s effects.
- They sailed upriver some more, with the sulfur-heavy air thickening, making it harder to breathe.

You hear it and smell it before you see it. Sulfur has been a constant smell since you arrived on this plane, but here it is tinged with something else - the iron scent of blood, a very literal taste of fear and rage. And the sounds - howls of rage, of pain, of absolute abandon. Hollow groans of mindless cannon fodder, plodding forward. Screams of incensed and insane creatures, the noise of their chitinous feet scrabbling over each other to get one nip of the enemy.
“By the gods.” Dreri seems to shrink slightly, her massive frame recoiling. “It’s the bridge. The bridge of Khalas.”
Tabi, too, for once, seems solemn. “Keep quiet, boys. This isn’t a battle we want to get in the middle of.”
You round the corner, and ahead of you, about 100 feet up, is an enormous wrought-iron bridge. At first, you think it’s collapsing, as the whole thing seems to be bending and writhing, and then you realize, it is engulfed in creatures. On one side are hundreds–thousands?– of the larvae you’ve seen before, surging across the expanse, led by and around by an enormous fiend, its four crab-like claws ripping and tearing at the enemy.
Their enemy marches forward in calm, almost lifeless rows. They wear golden masks that hide their faces, and they strike at the larvae with their long axes, cleaving several in two as they move ceaselessly forward. They march with feral looking four-legged creatures, as well as two enormous bull-like fiends.
Someone, roll me a history check.
It’s the Blood War. Not all of it. The Blood War rages all over the lower planes, but the Bridge of Khalas - it’s a key chokehold that each side only holds for scant days. According to legend, if either side were to hold it for good, they would win the war.
The group managed to sneak past with Tag casting “Pass without Trace”, and they made it under the bridge without incident, leaving the horrors of the bridge behind them.
As the air continued to thin and become ever more sulfurous, Josiah (con equal to or less than 14) started to feel the ill effects, being mildly exhausted by the atmosphere.
The group continued on their path, getting ever closer to the Crawling City.
