Recap - 2026-08-13
The gang spends a day in Sigil.
Josiah
- Spends mornings at the Civic Fest Hall (Clerk’s Ward) with Sensate contacts, sampling bizarre sensations and recording them into sensory stones. Had a vile oily drink that left a lingering taste for hours, and a pleasant citrus jelly.
- Browsed the Great Bazaar for magic items and bullets. Nothing notable found, but stocked up on mundane ammunition.
- Visited the Hall of Information (a massive, chaotically organized library) to research architecture, struggled with the filing system, and had a poor investigation check. Left empty-handed.
- The oily taste finally faded after his third ale at dinner.
Chibro
- Chibro spent significant time in the Hive Ward, navigating its shifting streets (successful Survival check).
- Witnessed a Dabus disassemble and rebuild a collapsing building with mere gestures.
- Discovered the Ditch overflowing with fresh water. A decennial event where a portal to the Plane of Water opens and flushes the rancid ditch clean. A spontaneous street festival erupted. Chibro collected a bottle of water from the Plane of Elemental Water.
- For lunch, found the Square Bar in the Ladies’ Ward — an automated establishment staffed by Quadratum, a sentient gear-and-eye mechanism that serves perfectly geometric food and drink. Quadratum revealed it was made in “a great place of wheels and gears” but was rejected by its creators; it now finds purpose and joy in serving on its own terms.
- On leaving, was approached by an obsidian-skinned, floating figure (a Dao) who flicked him a card: “Cindery’s Bonded Labor: Discreet and Guaranteed,” with directions to a shop in the Lower Ward.
- Visited the shop and negotiated the purchase of a Galeb Duhr named Tolland (3-year contract, negotiated down from 3,000 to 2,700 gold). The Dao repeatedly discouraged Chibro from anthropomorphizing Tolland, insisting he’s “just a rock.”
- On the walk home through the portal to Faunel (a gate town in the Clerk’s Ward, near the Tower of Sorceress, that cuts travel to the Outlands from days to hours), Tolland stopped to roll in the earth, seeming to “reconnect” with the ground. On Chibro’s demiplane, Tolland enthusiastically hauled boulders, built a miniature mountain, and shifted from his melancholy humming to a happy tune.
Angelus
- Wandered the Lower Ward looking for… something (he hasn’t yet decided on the question he wants answered).
- Passed the Shattered Temple (creepy vibes) and the Great Foundry.
- Found a card game outside the Generous Coin between a Triton and a Bariaur. Used subtle divine magic (a “Bewitched nose twitch”) to subtly flip a card and cause the Triton to lose. The Bariaur won big and cashed out with the money-changer embedded in the wall. The Bariaur failed to notice Angelus’s involvement.
- Spent midday in the Ladies’ Ward manipulating street games for amusement and collecting tips from lucky gamblers.
- For lunch, wandered into McNastie’s, a profoundly unsanitary establishment run by a massive ball-of-fur creature (species indeterminate) and a tentacled assistant that rolls out from the back. Received a charred, mealy leg of mystery meat (terrible) and surprisingly good liquor (had 4 drinks, passed all Con saves). Failed a deception check when probing the proprietor for info. Pretended to be a health inspector, got a free meal. Beaded curtain on the door.
- Noticed a fiendish-looking figure in fine robes enter McNastie’s asking about “Chirper’s” and long-term residents. The proprietor deflected, and the figure left. Angelus attempted to follow him but, being drunk (disadvantage on Stealth), was spotted and easily lost in the crowd. Knows roughly which direction the figure headed.
Tag
- Rides his Nightmare (flaming horse) pulling his portable stall through the streets to the Hive Ward, accompanied by Cath (his cat). Sets up his jewelry stall outside Fell’s relocated tattoo shop.
- Has a warm friendship with Fell, they share meals and exchange stories over tea at day’s end.
- Encountered Idic, a Githyanki, storming out of Fell’s shop. Idic was furious that Fell refused him more tattoos, claiming his body “can’t hold any more.” Idic demanded Tag sell him something impressive, flipped Tag’s cart in anger, and after a tense exchange, Tag proposed a hot dog eating contest. Idic accepted, to be held the next morning at the Great Gymnasium.
- Discovered Allesha’s Pantry, a charity food distribution in the Hive Ward. Met Allesha, donated 5 gold, received premium tea sachets. Was introduced to an ancient, nearly blind elf woman (~850–900 years old) who arrived at the pantry in a disoriented state and has been sheltered there. She possesses a broken magical brooch (a hexagonal red gemstone cracked in half) with scorch marks on the metal setting. Tag confirmed it’s magical (Arcana check) and took it to examine/repair, but hasn’t had time yet.
- Business picked up unexpectedly in the afternoon, so the brooch remains unexamined.
The Hot Dog Eating Contest
The next morning, the party convened at the Great Gymnasium. Tag commissioned Clear (the Bariur cook at Chirper’s) to make hot dogs. She used drake intestines (purchased from the Great Bazaar for 5 gold, notably near-sacrilegious for a Githyanki) and meat from an unnaturally crimson boar-like creature, grilling them over old coals from the axe-throwing pit. Baguettes served as buns.
Josiah stepped up as Tag’s champion against Idic. Angelus worked the crowd to build hype.
Round-by-round (Con saves, escalating DC):
- Rounds 1–4: Both contestants held pace. Josiah adopted a no-chew, slide-it-down technique. Parth voiced disgust.
- Round 5: Idic began struggling. Angelus strolled past and casually mentioned the “red dragon meat.” Idic gagged, choked, and yielded, conceding defeat to Josiah. He challenged Josiah to find him at the Hand of Gith for a real fight someday.
- Rounds 6–12+: Josiah kept going solo. The mysterious red meat began building genuine fire in his stomach. Smoke poured from his nose and mouth with each bite.
- Climax: Josiah’s sprayed outward in a cone of fire breath: 25 fire damage to Josiah and everyone nearby, scorching the Great Gymnasium’s pristine white marble wall. Tag dove in with his Nightmare to shield bystanders. A pixie initiated a slow clap, the crowd erupted, and the hot dog eating contest became an institution in Sigil. Josiah cast a healing spell and walked away with no net damage.
